Heidi Brownson
Trumpet
Heidi’s trumpet career began in the 5th
grade. Not only did she realize she enjoyed
playing the horn, but she also discovered
that she tended to get a crush on every male
first chair trumpet player that came along.
Therefore, when tryouts for chair placements
for High School band were scheduled, she
didn’t want to play better than the lead
player. (Remember, this is before Helen
Reddy sang “ I am Woman”.) Instead of
sitting 2nd chair as she had planned, she
ended up way down the line in the trumpet
section. For such stupidity, her band director
made her play the French Horn, an
instrument that lead to a few honor bands,
and the instrument that she played in
college. Heidi was also able to participate in
a clinic by Dizzy Gillespie, but he did give
that French Horn a funny look.
During her first teaching job in Weeping
Water, NE, they needed someone to help
play first trumpet in the pep band. Out came
the old trumpet and this lead to playing
musicals in the Lofte Theater in Manley, NE.
(Where once again, she was slightly
enamored with the lead trumpet player, but
unable to do much as they were both
married.)
Alas, babies and divorce came along and
once again, Heidi’s trumpet playing was put
on hold. However, the church she attended
needed a second trumpet for the worship
team and once again the dusty old trumpet
came out and Heidi was playing again.
A few years later, Heidi was asked to fill in for
a second trumpet player at the dedication of
a new church building. Heidi had heard of
Mike Brownson, and his stellar playing
abilities. She also knew he was playing the
lead part that day. So she decided to take
the gig just to see how “stellar” this guy was.
As it turned out, not only could he play, he
wasn’t bad looking either.
Heidi also plays with the Lincoln Community
Concert Band, but now that she is married to
Mike, there just isn’t another trumpet player
that could possibly take his place.
So now Heidi and Mike play together in One
More Time.( Heidi has also learned that she
has a talent for playing the maraca fruit.)
Could you ask for a better ending to a
trumpeters’ love story?
